Piece and context
Boyfriend is one of aiko’s best-known songs, and it is useful for learners because so much of it is built from ordinary Japanese. The song does not depend on rare grammar. Instead, it gets its force from quick emotional pacing, body-related wording, and a few very specific images.
It is also a good introduction to aiko’s style. Her lyrics often move quickly from plain speech into very concrete image-language, so a line can start in ordinary romance diction and suddenly land on something as specific as テトラポット.
Learner notes
Style and register
Boyfriend uses bright first-person language and mostly accessible grammar. The main challenge is not parsing the sentence shapes, but following the speed of the feeling: desire, touch, memory, and image shifts all arrive quickly.
- direct first-person confession
- vivid concrete imagery
- quick emotional pacing
- body-related expressions
- ordinary diction mixed with memorable objects
Important grammar patterns
- 〜たい (-tai): want to…, as in 逢って言いたい and 抱きたい
- 〜との (-to no): with…, as in あなたとの色んな事
- 〜位 (-kurai): to the extent that…, as in 刻みつけたい位
- 〜たら (-tara): if / when…, as in 確かめてたら
Vocabulary and reference notes
- 刻みつける (kizamitsukeru): to carve in, engrave deeply
- ほおずりする (houzuri suru): to rub one’s cheek against someone affectionately
- テトラポット (tetrapod / tetorapotto): concrete wave-break block; famous in this song because it gives the chorus a very specific physical image
- ぐっとくる (gutto kuru): to come strongly over someone, to hit emotionally
- useful for showing how an ordinary-looking lyric can hinge on one unusually specific noun
Text
Verse 1
1
早く逢って言いたい
Hayaku atte iitai
quickly meet-CVB say.want
I want to see you soon and tell you.
早く can be temporal ("soon"), but in love-song wording it often also carries impatience.
2
あなたとの色んな事
Anata to no ironna koto
you with GEN various things
All kinds of things about us.
あなたとの means "with you." 色んな事 is intentionally broad: all sorts of things.
3
刻みつけたい位
Kizamitsuketai kurai
engrave.want extent
To the point that I want to carve it in.
刻みつける means carving or engraving something in deeply. It is much stronger than plain remembering.
4
忘れたくないんだと
Wasuretakunain da to
forget.want-NEG EXPL QUOT
Because I do not want to forget.
〜んだ adds explanatory emphasis: "it's that I don't want to forget."
5
早く逢って抱きたい
Hayaku atte dakitai
quickly meet-CVB embrace.want
I want to see you soon and hold you.
Repeating 早く逢って gives the opening a breathless rhythm.
6
全ての始まりがあなたとで
Subete no hajimari ga anata to de
all GEN beginning NOM you with COP.CVB
That the beginning of everything was with you...
The sentence shape is simple, but 全ての始まり is a large phrase: "the beginning of everything."
7
本当に良かったと心から思ってる
Hontou ni yokatta to kokoro kara omotteru
truly ADV good-PST QUOT heart from think-PROG
...I truly think from the bottom of my heart that it was good.
心から means from the heart, sincerely.
8
唇かんで指で触って
Kuchibiru kande yubi de sawatte
lips bite-CVB fingers with touch-CVB
Biting my lips, touching with my fingers...
Both verbs are physical and close-up. The line stays at the level of lips, fingers, and touch.
9
あなたとのキス確かめてたら
Anata to no kisu tashikamete tara
you with GEN kiss confirm-CVB if
...and when I was confirming our kiss...
確かめる means checking or confirming. In this context it suggests re-feeling the kiss, not just verifying a fact.
10
雨が止んで星がこぼれて
Ame ga yande hoshi ga koborete
rain NOM stop-CVB stars NOM spill-CVB
The rain stopped, and stars spilled out.
The song suddenly jumps from touch to weather and sky imagery. That quick shift is very characteristic of aiko.
11
小さな部屋に迷い込んだ
Chiisana heya ni mayoikonda
small room DAT wander.into-PST
They wandered into my little room.
迷い込む means wandering or straying into somewhere. It gives the stars an oddly physical presence.
Chorus 1
12
Ah テトラポット登って
Ah tetorapotto nobotte
tetrablock climb-CVB
Ah, climbing up the tetrapod blocks...
テトラポット refers to the concrete wave-break blocks often seen by the sea. It is one of the song's most famous words because it is so specific.
13
てっぺん先睨んで
Teppen saki nirande
summit ahead glare.at-CVB
...staring toward the very top ahead...
てっぺん is a casual vivid word for the very top.
14
宇宙に靴飛ばそう
Uchuu ni kutsu tobasou

宇宙に靴飛ばそう is a playful exaggeration. The line suddenly scales up from the concrete tetrapod blocks to outer space.
15
Ah Ah あなたがあたしの頬にほおずりすると
Ah ah anata ga atashi no hoo ni houzuri suru to
you NOM I GEN cheek DAT cheek.rub do if

あたし is a softer, more intimate feminine first-person form than plain 私.
16

Our time stops.
止まる is a very plain verb, which makes the line feel direct rather than ornate.
17
好きよボーイフレンド

I love you, boyfriend.
好きよ uses the sentence-final よ for direct assertion. The title word itself is left in katakana loanword form.

Pitiful yesterday, calm today, and the globe still turns again.
地球儀 is a globe, not the earth in an abstract sense. That makes the image visual and slightly childlike.
